The sun welcomed me to the bay, Linton Bay. It was the only day of full sun in quite some time, I was told. After a few days I found this quite true. Clouds dominate the skies bringing rain throughout the day and night. If you leave your umbrella, it´s bound to downpour in spite of your hopeful thoughts. Perhaps it´s time for your second shower of the day? The heat instigates droplets until the cool breeze stops the flow.
As I walked down the pier, parading by the boats above and in water, the familiarity calmed me. Only the colours and names differed. Faded turquoise in various shades dominated the marina.
We were welcomed into a silver bullet boat – it was the captains first time driving on his own. Two upholstered booths surrounded him. In front a canopy shaded the sun yet washed legs with water droplets as it pleased. Directly behind the captain at an elevated level was another booth allowing occupants to gaze above his head. The perimeter of the boat was open to perch and peruse while the ocean air kept you cool.
Our #aquapreneur crew consisted of Grant, Rudy, Paul, Gilles, myself and a supporter, Simone. All of us here in Panama, from across the globe. All of us are connected to the sea in some way and dream of living upon it in the future. We believe that sustainable living means trading in our concrete comforts for a futuristic space floating above the ocean waves. Living this way not only connects us with our personal impact on the world but also benefits the oceanic ecosystem below our finless feet. How is this possible? SeaPods!
SeaPods will act as FADs – not the best acronym for this particular example, as our goal is for excellence and longevity. FAD or Fish Aggregation Device describes the role of the SeaPod in the ocean. Old subway cars, sunken ships and other foreign objects have played this role, however now we are able to live in one.
We cruised to by the location of past mock-ups in the marina, testing the base and conditions. We sailed by the incubator house – an home directly on the bay, housing the majority of us who are here to help. Father out we slowed to a stop near Isla Linton. This would be where the first 30 SeaPods would start their sustainable community. My memory flashed to the renderings – it painted the picture! An endless ocean horizon on one side and a undulating green isle on the other. Earth´s core colors showing their true beauty.
Around the bend we encountered a smaller island with a prominent white house – one James Bond had frequented in Solace. In that moment, Eco-Agent sprung to mind and I welcomed this term. That´s how I’d like to be portrayed.
Circling back to the space from which our journey began, our fearless leader, Grant, eased into the dock. We made it – no harm done. Could that be our daily mantra?
